The sighing is weird, too - he can almost fool himself into thinking John is still here, still human. He's never heard a cat breathe that deliberately. The trill, however, is closer to a noise one might expect, and he looks up, a little bewildered as well as cautiously charmed by it. Seeing John shake his head - it's as odd as the rest of it, but the meaning is quite clear, and Martin finally manages to offer him a tired, half-hearted smile. Even now, John doesn't want him blaming himself for this, and that's... he's right. He couldn't have known this would happen, and the guilt is an unnecessary distraction. They have far bigger problems.
"You're right," he says aloud, trying to effect a brisk and more professional tone. And much as he might like to go make a very ill-advised series of decisions where Magnus is concerned, there are more pressing logistical issues to deal with.
He wishes he could just ask John directly what he wants or needs, but that isn't currently practical, so: "Well, since we've got 'yes' and 'no' covered..." He sighs. "Are you... hungry?"
