Martin jolts and flinches back when John pulls away from him, much more aggressively than he could have anticipated. He'd thought this might become very awkward, or that maybe John would recognize what's happening — how desperately Martin's fallen for him over the course of one bloody day and a lot of confusing circumstances — and that it might make a mess of things somehow. But he wasn't expecting such a violent response, and for an awful moment he thinks he's just ruined everything, that the John he knows is showing himself in the face of such a brazen overstepping of boundaries.

But that doesn't seem to fit what's happening. John seems... angry, perhaps, but only at himself. That doesn't make sense, and yet he's apologizing a moment later, his usual composure completely obliterated in the face of... guilt?

Martin feels more confused than ever as he blurts back, "Wh- I'm fine, I just got through tell you I was fine, I don't— What are you talking about? You didn't do anything, it was my fault."
